With the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Subaru Ironman Canada this year, it was fitting that it was a Canadian sweep of the podium in the women's race
Before the race people speculated that in the women's contest, Linda Gallo would get out of the water first, attempt to extend her lead on the bike and hang on for the run. She executed that plan to perfection, coming out of the water second overall and had a 4:40 lead over her closest rival at the start of the run. Unfortunately for Gallo, Lisa Bentley followed her usual game plan by keeping everyone within striking distance until the marathon. Bentley unleashed a 3:12 marathon to overtake first Heather Wurtele then Gallo around the 15 km mark of the marathon.
The men’s race was a show of dominance by Kieran Doe form New Zealand. He came out of the water in first stayed there for the rest of the day. He started the run with a 13:30 advantage over Canada’s Jonathan Caron. Caron rode conservatively for the first 100 Km, then he attacked the field behind Doe. His move broke up the field behind him, leaving the race left to Doe and Caron to fight over during the marathon. Caron raced his heart out during the marathon, but Doe’s lead after the bike proved insurmountable. Even with Caron smacking out a 2:55 marathon, the fastest of the day, he could only managed to reduce Doe’s lead to just less than seven minutes at one time. Doe became the 2007 Subaru Ironman Canada Champion when he crossed the line in 8:32:45. Caron held on to second with Chris Brown running his way into third during the late stages of the marathon.
