A total of 120 Kona slots, a beautiful new venue and the participation of some of the world's top talent have organizers of the inaugural Ironman Germany giddy with excitement.
The new Ironman Germany Triathlon, which will take place in the German money capital of Frankfurt this August is quickly gaining profile. In recent weeks, several world-class athletes from Germany and other countries have announced their participation in the first edition of the new Ironman event.
Last Friday, Ironman Germany race management released more good news. On top of the already existing 100 slots for the Ironman Hawaii 2002, Xdream Sports & Events managed to secure 20 additional slots from those made available by the recent cancellation of Ironman South Africa. Ironman Germany is now offering a total of 120 Kona slots to the participants, the biggest number of slots in any race during this season.
The race will combine a spectacular and probably fast race course through the backcountry and downtown Frankfurt, with an excellent chance to qualify for Kona in October. The event, with its finish line on the historical Römer marketplace, will be a highlight not only for athletes but also for spectators.
The top German long distance rockets will compete, including Lothar Leder, Jürgen Zäck and Normann Stadler. To prevent total German supremacy, Britain's Spencer Smith will add international flavour to the men's race.
The women´s race offers a clash between the veteran Queen of Kona Paula Newby-Fraser and the German Katja Schumacher, who recently won the season opener race Ironman Florida.
