Austria Ironman 70.3 2008: Sprint finish


Massimo Cigana wins race in the last 100 metersItalian Massimo Cigana finally took the lead over the last 100 meters of the race, putting long-term leader Bjorn Andersson (SWE) in second place. Last years winner, Michael Göhner (GER), finished third. Daniel Niederreiter, the top Austrian, finished 11th. Yvonne Van Vlerken, from the Netherlands, claimed the women's title.

With the weather cooperating, there were a number of spectators on the course to enjoy the unique Austria Ironman 70.3 course, which includes a swim course that stretches over two lakes.

The weather conditions were perfect until the gun went off to start the first of five waves of athletes, although a thunder storm and pouring rain could not stop the field during the 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and 21.1km run. About the Race

Set close to Vienna, Ironman 70.3 Austria St. Pölten/ Vienna will take place for the first time on June 2, 2007. The race site is just 50 minutes drive from Austria's beautiful capital, making it an easy site to get to.

Athletes will enjoy a spectacular race through the wine-country of Lower Austria and the scenic Wachau region along the Donau river.

The race will start and finish at the Regional-Sportschool St.Pölten. The first of six waves will start at noon. A maximum of 1,500 competitors will be accepted for the event, which will finish at the St. Pölten tennis centre, world famous for the ATP tournament it hosts every year. The athletes will pass the tennis center six times during the half-marathon run, which will make this an outstanding event for spectators to watch.
