Gaylia Osterlund reports on Ironman 70.3 Buffalo Springs Triathlon resultsThe Ironman 70.3 at Buffalo Springs Lake is an event known around the world for conditions that most emulate those found at the Ford Ironman World Championships. As a matter of fact, just last week the race directors had put into place a contingency plan for the swim start just in case the 100 plus degree temperatures continued. On Sunday, however, athletes woke to cool temperatures, rain and high winds.

Since neither of last year's winners started this year's race, the only guarantee was the race would crown two new champions. Ultimately, it was the Aussies who handled the unusual weather to cross the line in first place.  Read the story »

About the Race

Qualifier for Foster Grant Ironman World Championship 70.3Qualifier for Ford Ironman World ChampionshipOpen water lake swim. Wave starts (approximately 100 per wave), rectangular course counter clockwise, entry at beach area and exit on cement boat dock area, within 20 yards of the transition area.

Bike course is a modified out and back, out of town farm to market roads, limited traffic, flat with 8 challenging hills, ranging from 2.9% - 8.9% grade and a quarter of a mile to 1.2 miles in length.

Run is on asphalt, flat with 3 challenging hills, ranging from 10-14% (not the same hills as found on the bike course) grade. The hills are approximately 300 yards to 880 yards in length. Partially shaded, tough, scenic course.

Watch as Andy Potts, a highly decorated athlete with short-course success, sprinted to a first place 3:42:33 finish, while Australia’s Mirinda Carfrae broke the course record and claimed victory finishing at 4:07:25.
