Eleven CEOs racing at California 70.3

Inaugural CEO event in Oceanside next weekend

Published Thursday, March 20, 2008

Eleven CEOs racing at California 70.3Brent de Jong runs a $2.8 Billion company with 14,000 employees, is not yet 35, and competes in triathlons for fun. de Jong is a typical CEO 'over achiever' who never stops looking for the next challenge and revels in achieving what most would deem as virtually impossible. Is it possible to run a company of that size and still be competitive at an event that includes 1.2 miles of swimming, 56 miles of cycling, followed by a 13.1 mile run?

On March 29 we will find out as de Jong joins ten other CEOs in the AIG CEO Challenge at the Ford California Ironman 70.3 in Oceanside.

CEO Challenges (www.ceochallenges.com) is the world-leader in sport competitions designed specifically for CEOs and C-suite executives. It started with 15 CEOs at Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid in 2001 and has grown to the point where the program is now an official licensed product of the Ironman Corporation. There will be 125 CEOs competing at six events worldwide in 2008. The fastest ten CEOs from these events will have the opportunity to compete at the CEO Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii in October where the winner will be granted the title of ‘Fittest CEO® in the World’!

The CEO Ironman Challenge in California includes luxury accommodations at the La Costa Resort, a CEO Welcome Dinner with current World Ironman 70.3 Champions Andy Potts and Mirinda Carfrae, all logistics associated with the event, a race strategy breakfast with Greg Welch, and CEO Awards Dinner in Carlsbad on Saturday night.

“This is the first year we have offered a CEO Challenge at the Ford California Ironman 70.3, and we couldn’t be happier with the results,” states Ted Kennedy, Owner of CEO Challenges. “We have 11 CEOs that represent almost $3 Billion in total business and everything from large publicly traded companies to new start-ups. However, no matter what the size of company, to get to Oceanside all CEOs had to find a way to juggle intensive training with running their company, ridiculous travel schedules and family commitments. I am constantly amazed at what these people can handle, and continue to be impressed by these tremendous business leaders and athletes.”

The CEO Ironman Challenge in California runs from March 27-30, and is presented by the AIG Personal Client Group. Over 15% of net proceeds from the event will go to the Challenged Athletes Foundation charity allowing disabled athletes the opportunity to compete in their favorite sports. The fastest CEO in California will earn a much coveted slot to Hawaii for the CEO Ironman World Championship.
