Alexander and Carfrae win in Newfoundland
Australia has a great day at Ironman 70.3 Newfoundland
Published Sunday, July 27, 2008
Craig Alexander rode and ran away from his competition at today's Ironman 70.3 Newfoundland race to claim his second consecutive title, finishing just under two minutes ahead of Richie Cunningham and three minutes ahead of Chris Legh. Mirinda Carfrae also claimed the women's title with a six-minute win over Canadian Cynthia Wilson - the Australian finished eighth overall in the race. Canadians Magali Tisseyre and Sara Gross were the next two across the line.
Canadian Olympian Brent McMahon was out of the water in second place and came off the bike ahead of Alexander. The two had opened up a gap on Cunningham and Legh. McMahon pulled out of the race during the run thanks to a knee problem, which left Alexander on his own to cruise to the title.
Carfrae led the women's race from from start to finish. Wilson managed to stay with last year's Ironman 70.3 world champion, but fell off the pace during the run.
The day was extremely hot, by Corner Brook standards, with temperatures over 30 degrees Celsius.
